Remarks of Peter Goodrich at the first annual
Joseph H. Conlin Benefit Gala for the
Musicians Club of New York, May 7, 2009:

I am delighted to welcome everyone tonight on behalf of Steinway & Sons.  It is a privilege for us to provide Steinway Hall as the venue for the first Joseph H. Conlin Memorial Concert for the Musicians Club of New York.
Joe Conlin was probably the best friend a performing artist could have.  He was immensely generous with his time and talent and personal resources and he touched the lives of countless singers and instrumentalists and certainly of everyone here this evening.
I could speak at length about Joe, but with the ambitious program ahead I will keep these remarks very brief.
When I think of Joe, as I often do, I picture in my mind his beaming face and his twinkling eyes.  He would be thrilled with this event and with the program that has been planned.
Among his many great qualities, Joe was an eternal optimist.  As an example, he was forever updating us with his plans for the millions he would get when he won the lottery.  It was almost discouraging to hear Joe talk about winning the lottery, because you felt as though you didn’t really stand a chance.  Joe would win, and he would buy that fabulous penthouse apartment in the Pierre and that big Rolls Royce with the white sidewalls.  You just knew it would happen.
But the way I look at it, we all were the winners of that lottery, and our big prize was Joe Conlin.  Joe brought joy and adventure, fabulous stories, and beautiful music to us all, and through him our lives, and the lives of countless others, were brightened immeasurably.
Let’s celebrate our friend with some wonderful music.  Thanks to all of you, but especially, Joe, thanks to you.
  – Peter Goodrich, SVP, Steinway & Sons Inc.

MUSICIANS CLUB OF NEW YORK

The Musicians Club of New York was organized in 1911 and from 1913-1917 it was led by its third President, the legendary conductor Walter Damrosch. By 1916, the Club had grown to 750 members. World War I saw a decline of the role of clubs in all walks of life, but the Musicians Club has survived by continuing to play a vital role in the musical life of New York, providing a stimulating musical and social environment for its members and their guests. In addition to a concert series from October through April, the Club organizes and funds competitions that select and encourage talented young performers and composers. In May, there is a Gala Fundraising Concert. Membership is open to professional and amateur musicians, professional and educational music representatives, and anyone interested in enjoying and supporting classical music.

CONCERTS, RECEPTIONS, AND SPECIAL EVENTS
Each season, the Musicians Club sponsors a monthly series of Concerts in various venues and a special Fundraising Gala. Meet-the-Artist Receptions follow these Concerts. All Musicians Club events are for members and their guests.

YOUNG ARTIST AWARDS
Every spring, the Musicians Club of New York holds a Competition for young artists between the ages of eighteen and thirty. The categories – Voice, Piano, Strings, and Winds/Brass – are rotated annually. Cash prizes and concert performances are awarded to the First, Second and Third Prize winners, selected by Juries of prominent musicians.
The Club also provides professional career guidance to young artists.

AIM MUSIC FUND, INC.
The Musicians Club of New York actively promotes worldwide orchestral performances of contemporary composers. In 1979, the Koussevitzky Foundation chose the Musicians Club of New York to administer the American International Music Fund, Inc., which was funded by Serge Koussevitzky. This fund was established to give recognition to Composers during their lifetime and to encourage the performance and appreciation of contemporary music. KIRA, the annual Serge & Olga Koussevitzy International Recording Award, is given to a living Composer for a recorded symphonic work, scored for not less than sixteen musicians. The composition must have been released on a commercial recording between January 1 and Dec. 31. The winning work is selected by a distinguished Awards Jury made up of conductors, musicologists and critics. In addition, Serge Koussevitzky's wife Olga served as President of the Musicians Club from 1962 to 1975 and willed the Club money, which was received upon the death of her niece, in 1991.

In 1978, following Olga Koussevitzky's death, the prize was officially renamed the Serge and Olga Koussevitzky International Recording Award, KIRA. The Musicians Club of New York has carried on the award in their honor as part of their program of support for contemporary musicians.
